Artistic research and residencies

Post Breakers Revenge with Anniina Sono-Tikka and Dennis Nylund

Movement-based research to study identity and movement language of aging breakdancers. The research wants to explore and expose the changing bodies and movement language within the breaking culture. The culture strongly suggests movement language based on intense physicality and mental conquering other dancers in space. Within the research group, we have noticed that the cultural structure within breakdance does not necessarily support aging and developing personal movement language. Especially if the interests and the conditions of the dancers' body change through age, and proving the physical skills is not appealing anymore. The research wants to create an opening and offer space within the breaking culture for bodies and minds interested in alternative expression.

Embodied Futures Workshop concept

I created a workshop concept as part of my artistic research about Movement Improvisation as A Practice to Imagine Sustainable Futures. The concept offers a space to reflect on the present moment and imagine and speculate possible futures through movement improvisation scores. Movement improvisation allows the participants to play and explore relationships with different human and non-human entities in real time. Speculation of the future is experienced bodily, and the actions toward the futures have immediate consequences. In this way, I hope to offer a space for people to experience and see what is happening in the space based on their actions and decisions. After the practical experimentation, there is a possibility for reflection and discussion. The concept is directed to anyone interested in speculating about the world through movement. Therefore, you don't need to be a dancer or artist to participate. The methodology is suitable for developing performative material. Still, I also want to offer the workshop for collectives, communities, and organizations interested in speculating about the present and future.

Gömböc - Shape that should not exist (Yumi-Collective)

The gömböc research project aims to study the reciprocity of sound and movement through improvisation scores, including movement and sound and voice layering. The inspiration for the project comes from a shape called Gömböc, which is a shape that should not exist because it has only one balance point. In nature, objects have more than one balance point. Gömböc has inspired the project to research the relationship between sound and bodies and their points of balance and reciprocities in time and space.

Movement Improvisation as a Practice to Imagine Sustainable Futures

My MA research at ArtEZ Performance Practices studied methodology to use movement improvisation as a practice to imagine and speculate futures. The research thrives from research and practices related to Postmodern Movement Improvisation and Futures Studies
